The Cortex International brand platinum flat iron has been super hot the last few days(pardon the pun), probably mostly because of the price, which seems to be around $30USD on amazon and some even cheaper on ebay and other sites. Of course I would want a red one or the skull/crossbones patterned one and that’ll probably cost me a few bucks more. nbd. Check out the other color options in the pic below. Anyhow, it’s a good price for an all around solid flat iron with the functions you have to have (like a temperature gauge) and without the costly extras that you probably wouldn’t use anyway.

Cortex International marketing info:

Finally a line of professional irons with all of the features that matter and none that don’t. Microprocessors monitoring each plate guarantee consistent, even heat while FAR infrared technology leaves your hair shiny, healthy, and smooth.

Premium Ceramic plates and Ionic technology smooth down ragged open hair cuticles, while Far-infrared technology distributes even heat to hair within the shaft preventing damage to outer cuticle.

The important bullets about the straightener:

Suitable for all hair lengths and thickness

Sleek, ergonomic design with no-slip grip

Heats to maximum temperature swiftly and will remain constant throughout use

Clamping plates are even and close tight for consistent style and even heat

Floating plates optimize styling efficiency

Beveled plates allow multiple styling techniques

Swivel cord prevents tangling

Hooked end for easy hanging and storage

Variable temperature setting for all hair types

110-220V, 60Hz, 90 watts

Temperature gauge with settings from 140°F to 450°F (60°C – 230°C)

Ok, so there’s tourmaline, ceramic, ionic and all kinds of other types of technology involved with flat irons and hair straighteners… ever wonder what it all actually means? Here’s a short list of basic concepts for what you’re actually looking at when you look at hair straightener features:

Tourmaline:

This semi-precious stone is first crushed into a fine powder and infused into the ceramic plates of the flat iron. This plate generally creates longer lasting straight hair and a sleeker, shinier, frizz-free result. Tourmaline plates are also designed to keep your hair healthier and cause less heat damage. This has definitely become a salon professional favorite!

Ceramic:

A smooth plate that will not chip or peel and helps prevent breakage (with no pulling or tugging at your hair!) The ceramic allows the plate to heat uniformly without creating heat spots. The temperature usually goes from a medium heat before becoming extremely hot.

Titanium:

This durable metal plate also allows for an even distribution of heat (like the ceramic). This flat iron features clamps that attaches directly to the metal plates shortening the “wait” time for heating up. You can imagine why this feature, along with it being light weight and scratch resistant might be a favorite for hair stylist and salons allowing for servicing many clients in a shorter time.

Ionic:

Negatively charged molecules that allow for faster straightening and healthier looking hair. The negative ions help relax your hair and eliminate static.

Far Infrared:

All ceramic flat irons will use far infrared heating. Its results are by heating the hair inside out and said to be one of the “gentlest” ways of heating hair. This helps prevent damage on the surface of your hair. Hopefully you’ll find one that works best for you. Although you may have to spend a little more on a professional flat iron- it will be worth every cent!
